Hamilton & hare new terry towelling collection is not JUST for beach days.
If I was to tell my 10 year old self huddled on a beach in West Wales in my custard yellow Terry towelling polo shirt, that I’d still have a love for the child friendly fabric several decades later, I probably would have turned up my ice cream covered nose. Yet its come to pass that the fluffy Terry towelling cloth still occupies my adult wardrobe. I’m not alone in my love of this fabric, often steeped in nostalgia for a certain age group of the population. British brand Hamilton & Hare have introduced Terry towelling into their loungewear collection this month and it could prove to be a sound investment for your working from home wardrobe.
The lounge and underwear aficionados are probably better placed than others in understanding the requirements of what men need from their current wardrobes, as we shift from our suited and booted daily commute in favour of working from home. Since its inception the brand has designed and created a number of staple pieces with comfort and versatility in mind, from its seamless underwear to a body hugging deconstructed knitted blazer - perfect for when travelling. The new Terry towelling line is offered up in some of these staples from polo shirts, lounge pants (joggers), drawstring shorts and a Terry lined zip up hooded sweat top.
Taken from the French word tire, which refers to the way the cotton threads of the fabric are ‘pulled’ into loops and left uncut, the tactile towelling has been around a lot longer than my 1970’s family holiday. It was first manufactured on an industrial scale by another British brand Christy back in 1850 and has been in and out of fashion ever since. While the new Hamilton & Hare range is designed in London, its made in Portugal by one of the brands small scale manufacturers, delivering superb quality across the range with special attention given to stitching and finishes along with the added guarantee of breathability and natural absorption.
The Terry pieces have all the right comfort credentials, without compromising on style with a more streamlined silhouette rather than a shapeless more voluminous cut. Offered up in a wearable mix and match colour range of tobacco, olive green, navy and grey, giving plenty of opportunity to pair pieces with your existing wardrobe staples. Easy to pull on combinations that you’ll actually want to get our of your PJ’s for (they do also make great nightwear btw) ready for that Zoom meeting or pop out to the shop for your essentials. While my 1970s custard Terry towelling polo might be consigned to a bit of personal nostalgia, maybe now is the perfect excuse to introduce some more Terry cloth back into my daily wardrobe. There are few fabrics that feel like a warm cuddle when worn but Terry towelling is one of them and who couldn’t do with a warm cuddle right now?
The Terry Towelling collection is available from £85 at Hamilton and Hare, 39 Chiltern Street, London, W1U (open from 10am — 3pm, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday by appointment)
